FRIENDS Fisher Peak Chapter
The Fisher Peak Chapter enjoyed another successful year with our focus on beautifying and maintaining the Blue Ridge Parkway while working with other organizations and promoting the FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Twenty workdays were spent on the Parkway, totaling 634 hours of FRIENDS labor, including 248 hours contributed by students from the University of Notre Dame. Workdays focused on:
- Maintaining hiking trails that the Chapter had built in earlier years.
- Landscaping the grounds surrounding the Blue Ridge Music Center including: planting trees and shrubs, and weeding and mulching flower beds.
- Building a new snake fence near the amphitheater.
- Clearing fallen trees from the Parkway to make it passable following the severe winter.
![]() The Fisher Peak Chapter worked with the University of Notre Dame again this year in hosting 2 groups of students as part of Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concern’s Appalachia Studies Seminar. The 2 visits involved 11 total students. They worked on the Parkway and were introduced to the people and culture of this region. The students contributed a total of 248 hours of work on the Parkway and experienced a total of 184 hours of exposure and interchange with the people of the area.
The Fisher Peak Chapter was also active in promoting the FRIENDS organization and educating local citizens, government, business, and visiting tourists on the natural beauty of the Parkway. The chapter actively staffed12 FRIENDS booths at the Blue Ridge Music Center concerts and the Galax Leaf and String Festival -- totaling 111 hours.
In addition to the above mention projects, administrative tasks -- including steering committee meetings, board meetings, clerical, and report generation -- accounted for 270 hours of effort.
