Roanoke Valley Chapter is off and running!

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of FRIENDS was organized in June 2006. Our territory includes milepost 80 to 130 (just north of Peaks of Otter, southward through Roanoke County).  Chapter volunteers have a variety of projects, including work on the Parkway and public outreach events.  Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the FRIENDS Roanoke office to review activities and plan upcoming events.  For those who can't attend the meetings, volunteer opportunities are regularly circulated by email.  If you are a member of FRIENDS and live in the Roanoke Valley or surrounding area, you are welcome to become a part of our Chapter!

Our current projects include:

  • Trail Adoption:  Our chapter volunteers have adopted several trails in our territory, but a few remain available for adoption.  If you would like to adopt a trail, please contact us.

  • Viewshed Protection: The Chapter spearheads all tree planting projects and does membership recruitment and logo merchandise sales at each event.  We hope to have our next tree planting event in the spring of 2008.

  • Parkway Projects: We work with Parkway maintenance staff to identify projects that volunteers can assist with.  If you want to roll up your sleeves and contribute your labor to keeping the Parkway up to date, please let us know.

At the present time, we are planning the following projects:

  • Re-painting the Parkway mileposts

  • Restoring split rail fences along the Parkway.

  • Speakers Bureau:  We would be happy to make a presentation (slide show)  to your group about the Parkway, FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the work of the Roanoke Valley Chapter.

  • We provide support to the Parkway donation box program by retrieving donations and seeing that they get into the bank (100% of the money in the boxes goes to the Blue Ridge Parkway).
