Centennial Initiative

President Bush has recently released his proposed budget for fiscal year 2008, and the news for the National Park Service has generated much discussion. On Wednesday, February 7th the President spoke to a gathering of concerned citizens at Shenandoah National Park outlining his Centennial Initiative, explaining how it ties to the $2.4 billion operating budget he has proposed for the National Park Service.

Bush describes the Centennial Initiative this way

Over the next 10 years, Bush challenges public and private investment up to $3 billion to prepare the parks for their 100th anniversary in 2016. Currently the Parks receive about $20 million per year in cash gifts. The Centennial Challenge will increase the level of giving and help fund the signature programs and projects identified through a public, open, and transparent process.

  • $1 billion ($100 million per year for 10 years) will be funded by the President’s Centennial Commitment. These funds will hire 3000 more seasonal park rangers, guides and maintenance workers; repair buildings, improve landscapes; and enroll more children in Junior/Web Ranger programs.
  • $1 billion ($100 million per year for 10 years) to be
contributed by public and private investment in the parks.
  • $1 billion ($100 million per year for 10 years) will be matched by annual mandatory federal spending dollar for dollar.
